ABSTRACT: eMammal is a web-accessible data repository for wildlife images hosted by the Smithsonian Institution and supported by numerous institutions, particularly the North Caroline Museum of Natural Sciences. It is structured to allow projects to be constructed and managed for the benefit of the project PI and staff (professional and citizen scientist), with the data eventually publically accessible for cross-project examination and analysis. eMammal has 4 components; a desktop application for data input; a cloud-based expert review tool for the PI; a data repository with full curation of images and metadata, and a website for volunteer outreach. The website (emammal.si.edu) also has a public interface for viewing wildlife images across projects and for downloading data and education lesson plans from select projects. The repository currently holds over 5 million images and associated metadata from throughout the world. It has over 30 active projects, with at least 15 projects past the embargo period set by the PI and accessible to the public. One current project in North Carolina uses a citizen science corps to assess doe/fawn ratios for while-tailed deer and coyote distributions. We will present the steps needed to setting up a digital repository and the key issues faced for managing data, volunteers and projects.
